Members of the provincial Organised Crime Investigation are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after a shooting incident at the entrance of the Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The shooting left one man dead and two others injured, while a fourth person managed to flee the scene.
The incident is seemingly linked to the death of a known gang member, who was beaten and stabbed in Habelgaarn Street in Gelvan Park on Saturday night.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the driver of a white Nissan Sani and three passengers were driving from Habelgaarn Street to Livingstone Hospital at 00:30 am on Sunday.
She said several shots were fired at the vehicle at the entrance of the hospital, fatally wounding the driver, who has been identified as Godfrey Jaggers, 34.
"Two other victims, a male and a female (in their 20's) also sustained gunshot wounds. The fourth managed to run away."
At around 22:40 on Saturday, a known Gqeberha gang member succumbed to his injuries after he was allegedly beaten and stabbed in Habelgaarn Street.
Naidu said police responded to a complaint of trespassing at a house.
Here, the victim was allegedly being assaulted by a group of people.
The man had multiple stab wounds and other injuries all over his body.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.
A case of murder is under investigation.
The deceased's next of kin must still be traced.
"Police suspect that the cases may be linked however the investigation is ongoing. The incidents are gang-related," Naidu confirmed.
