Cops offer sweets in exchange for tyres

Port Elizabeth police have embarked on a campaign to rid the the city's Northern areas of tyres before the traditional guy fawkes celebrations next Tuesday.

The campaign which kicked off on Monday, encourages children to collect tyres and drop them off at the Gelvandale police station in exchange for sweet parcels.

Police spokesperson, Captain Johan Rheeder, says they're also offering special prizes to children who bring in more than 15 tyres.

He says so far, they've collected over 600 tyres, the highest number since the campaign started several years ago.

Rheeder says they're also encouraging schools to get involved adding that the school that collects the most tyres will get three sponsored soccer kits.
