Cops issue stern warning to parents in Northern Areas

Port Elizabeth Police have issued a stern warning to anyone preventing children from attending school in the Northern areas on Monday that they will be dealt with.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Police were deployed to monitor the situation.

There's also a police presence at the Education Department offices in Sutton Road, Sidwell.

Naidu warns that any person who incites, intimidates or violates any law in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act, The Schools Act or the Road Traffic Act pertaining to the prevention of children from attending school will be arrested.

Parents of school children in the Northern Areas have had long-standing issues with the education department over a raft of issues including overcrowding and teacher deployment.

They've threatened to close schools in the area from today unless their grievances are adequately addressed.

AlgoaFM News has received reports on Monday morning that a number of schools are indeed closed.

Northern Areas Education Forum spokesperson Ronnie Matthys told Algoa FM news there would be another urgent meeting with the education department on Monday morning and then with the parents in the evening
