Three police officers from Jeffreys Bay appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrates Court on Thursday on a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
The accused are Sergeants Mveleli Ncana, Lulamile Mshweshwe, and Samantha Prinsloo.
The charge pertains to the arrest and the subsequent release of Jeffreys Bay lawyer Dieter Brandstetter on 3 January last year.
Brandstetter was handed over to police after drugs were allegedly found in his possession.
Security guards at a mall in Jeffrey's Bay phoned the police to report that Brandstetter had allegedly used drugs on the premises.
It is alleged that Brandstetter was taken to the police station but released without being charged.
Not long after his release, he allegedly plowed into a local teacher with his car.
Dimitreau Bosman Domingon, 58, passed away as a result of the crash.
The police officers' conduct before the accident formed part of a year-long investigation by the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit before they were arrested and charged last month.
On Thursday, the case was postponed because Ncana and Mshweshwe had not yet finalised their legal representation.
Prinsloo is represented by Defence Advocate Jason Thysse.
The accused, who are all out on bail of R500 each, will appear in court again on 2 May.
They are still on active SAPS duties while an internal investigation is underway.
Brandstetter has been charged with murder, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless and negligent driving.
He is set to appear in court again on 8 May.
