Cop braves long drop to save baby

A Patensie policeman has earned the praise of his colleagues for jumping into a long-drop toilet to save a new born baby tossed away by her young mother.

Police spokesperson, warrant officer Gerda Swart, says constables Mildred Lobisa and Frankie Williams were called out late on Wednesday afternoon to investigate a report of a baby crying inside a long-drop toilet.

She says the pair demolished the zinc structure and Constable Williams did not hesitate to climb into the pile of faeces to rescue the child.

Swart picks up the story.

"They wrapped the little one in a towel and drove to the hospital; she had burn marks on her skin due to the acid in the long drop. The little girl was named Mpho and she is in a stable condition at this stage"

Swart says the child has been removed from the care of the mother, Lucrisia Hendricks, who faces a charge of attempted murder.

The mother has since appeared in court and the case has been postponed to the 12 of June.

Mother was released on bail of R500.
