A convicted rapist who was wanted by police in the Western Cape for the attempted rape of minors has been arrested and sentenced to 12 years for child pornography.
James Summers Prinsloo was sentenced in the Durban Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
In April 2019, police asked the public's assistance in finding Prinsloo who allegedly attempted to rape three minors in the Muizenberg area.
He was on the run and a warrant of arrest was issued.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele says that same month a Huawei phone was found inside a taxi and the contents of the memory card contained images of child pornography, as well as images of a man who was believed to be the photographer and possible owner of the phone.
She says initially, they could not access the information on the phone but detectives managed to get the memory card which was analysed and the suspect was identified.
The man, who turned out to be Prinsloo, was finally tracked down in the Durban, where he was arrested at the Esplanade on the 12th of November.
Prinsloo appeared in court where he was denied bail.
Mbele says they also managed to track down the children in the photographs as some of them were wearing their school uniforms.
The minors admitted to police that they were sexually assaulted by Prinsloo.
He will now face further charges for these alleged offences in Muizenberg.
Prinsloo was previously convicted for other sexual offences in Durban and was convicted for rape for which he was sentenced to five years in prison.
He also has a previous conviction for indecent assault for which he was sentenced to a fine of R2 000 or three months in prison.
