King Williams Town Flying Squad and K9 Unit members have re-arrested a 22-year-old inmate who escaped along with three other prisoners from the Mdantsane Correctional Centre outside East London a week ago.
Captain Siphokazi Mawisa says police followed up on information and arrested Sandile Vena at Peelton, some 60 kilometres north-west of East London, on Tuesday afternoon.
Correctional Services officials were also on the scene.
Vena was serving 23 years for rape, robbery and kidnapping at the time of his escape. He also has another pending criminal case in King Williams Town.
Captain Mawisa said Vena was being detained at Vulindlela and would appear in the Mdantsane Magistrate Court soon on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
The three inmates who escaped along with Vena remain at large.
They were also serving lengthy sentences for robbery, rape and murder and are considered to be very dangerous.
He appeared in court on Wednesday and the case was postponed until the 8th of March.
