Constable shot during armed robbery in King Williams Town

A Police Constable from Butterworth sustained a gunshot wound in the arm following a shoot out on Thursday with unknown suspects in King Williams Town.

Police Spokesperson Captain Siphokasi Mawisa says police swiftly responded to an armed robbery at the corner of Maclean and Market Street in town, shortly after 12 pm.

She says it is alleged that a truck driver from a business went to deposit cash at the bank when unknown men came from behind and grabbed his money bag.

Mawisa says a shoot out between police who arrived on scene and the robbers ensued.

The 42-year-old constable was shot in his arm and taken to hospital.

Mawisa says the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in an unknown vehicle.

Police gave chase but the suspects managed to get away and are still on the run.
