Congolese man arrested in EC for working as a doctor

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) urged members of the public to only consult healthcare professionals whose credibility is known and who are registered with the Council.

This follows the arrest of an unregistered Congolese national who was working as a doctor in Adelaide in the Eastern Cape.

The HPCSA in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies arrested the 35-year-old Ilunga Mwenze.

A Spokesperson Tshepo Seloana says Mwenze was employed by a registered practitioner, Dr Onwughara,  using the Adelaide address (nr. 4 Bon-Accord Street), however, the Inspector was informed that this doctor was a permanent employee at the Addington Hospital in Durban.

Mr Mwenze made a brief court appearance on Wednesday and was denied bail.

He will be back in court next week for a formal bail application.

In December 2018, another unregistered Congolese national was arrested for working at a practice in Port St Johns.
