Concerns raised over Covid19 infection rate in Western and Eastern Cape

The National Department of Health has expressed concern over new cases of Covid-19 in the Western and Eastern Cape.

The two provinces combined comprised 84% of the total new cases.

Minister Mkize said he would be visiting the Western and Eastern Cape provinces this week.

As of Sunday, the total number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa is 10,015, which is 595 more than Saturday's total.

Eight more Covid-19-related deaths were reported, three from the Western Cape, one from the Eastern Cape, and four from Gauteng.

This brings the total national deaths to 194.

Meanwhile, the number of people who travelled from the WC to the EC that have tested positive for COVID-19 is now 137.

These cases were recorded during the 7 day grace period where people were allowed to travel across provincial borders. The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCM) is urging anyone who travelled to the Metro during this time, specifically from the Western Cape to call 0800 032 364.

The breakdown of provincial deaths and recoveries were as follows:

Eastern Cape - 22 deaths / 519 recoveries

Free State - 6 deaths / 105 recoveries

Gauteng - 22 deaths / 1247 recoveries
