The Democratic Alliance says the theft of electricity in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is hitting the poor, fueling price increases and undermining job creating businesses in the Metro.
DA councillor, Angelo Dashwood, says the mid term budget performance report highlights approximately R200 million in electricity losses between July and December last year.
He says the report further notes that the biggest increase was in non-technical losses due to the increasing theft of electricity in the Metro.
Daswhood says affordable and consistent electricity supply is critical for a growing Metro that wants to attract investment and create jobs.
He says electricity losses like those experienced in 2012/2013 undermines the maintenance and expansion of infrastructure required to grow the economy.
