A small group of community members from the Ramaphosa village in Patensie set alight the house of a man who was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning for murder.
The 30-year-old suspect was walking home with his 30-year old girlfriend, Monique du Plooy when they allegedly had an argument before he stabbed her to death.
Police Spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the man was arrested at 2 am but the community retaliated and set the suspect's house on fire, including furniture which belonged to his family.
The Humansdorp Cluster Commander Brigadier John Lebok strongly condemned the violent acts by the community and said those responsible will be brought to book.
He further called for calm and asked the community to not take the law into their own hands.
The suspect will appear in the Hankey Magistrates Court on Monday.
