Committee wants investigation into display of weapons during Gqeberha violence

Select Committee on Trade and Industry in Parliament, wants an investigation to be launched into the display of weaponry among citizens amid the violence that broke out in Gqeberha.

Chaos erupted in Korsten on Wednesday following an accident between a car, believed to belong to a businessman in the area and a mini-bus taxi driver.

According to police, the situation escalated with at least eight taxis, property and two vehicles set alight.

Chairperson, Mandla Rhayi says the committee would like the police to investigate the display of weaponry as it could have been obtained illegally.

Rhayi says the Committee is also worried about the economic impact of the violence in Gqeberha.

He says that there has already been concern from informal traders.

The Minister of Police Bheki Cele is in Nelson Mandela Bay on Thursday where he will do a walkabout at the Korsten taxi rank.
