Two men from Coligny who were sentenced for killing a teenager in the so-called Sunflower case appeared briefly in the Mmabatho High Court on Friday where they were granted bail of R20 000 each pending the outcome of their appeal.
The 26-year-old Pieter Doorewaard and the 34-year-old Phillip Schutte were sentenced to 18 and 23 years in prison, respectively for killing a teenager who allegedly stole a sunflower.
In August the men were granted leave to appeal their conviction directly to the Court of Appeals in Bloemfontein after a successful petition to the Appeals Court by their legal representative Advocate Barry Roux.
The Organisation Afriforum funded Doorewaard and Schutte's appeal and said they would continue to do so.
