Coldest night of the year in PE as EC freezes

A passing cold front and the lack of cloud cover contributed to Port Elizabeth experiencing its coldest night of the year overnight with the mercury dipping to an icy 2.6 degrees celsius.

The coldest place in the Eastern Cape was Buffelsfontein near Molteno at minus 9.6 degrees.

A number of other inland towns experienced sub-zero temperatures with Willowmore at - 2.6, Somerset East at - 3.4, Barkley East at - 4.6, Elliot at - 3.8 and Aliwal North at - 3.1. Graaff-Reinet was -2 degrees and Addo -1.3.

The warmest place overnight was East London at a balmy 7.2 degrees.

Garth Sampson at the PE branch of the SA Weather Service reports that there is some light rain in prospect for Saturday but that the temperatures will recover nicely on Sunday which is forecast to be a beautiful day across the province.
