The Clubhouse of the Buffs Rugby Club in East London has been destroyed by fire.
The fire started while club members were watching the second half of Sunday's rugby Test between the Springboks and Scotland at Murrayfield..
Police spokesperson, captain John Fobian, says the fire started in the kitchen of the clubhouse and rapidly spread through the entire building.
No-one was injured.
Fobian said a forensics team had been dispatched from Port Elizabeth to investigate the cause of the fire.
Buffs is a sporting institution in East London and is one of the oldest sports clubs in the country - having being founded in 1877.
Former Buffs Club captain Glenn van der Merwe told AlgoaFM news that Buffs would rise from the ashes.
He said the great tragedy, however, was all the memorabilia that had been lost in the blaze which could never be replaced.
