A Russian man living in Cape Town and on holiday at Plettenberg Bay, had a lucky escape at the town's Dunes Beach on Wednesday.
Plett NSRI station commander Marc Rodgers said the Institute's station 14 Plettenberg Bay duty crew was activated on Wednesday afternoon following reports of a drowning in progress at Dunes Beach.
Rodgers said a local man Patrick Walton swam into the surf in an attempt to rescue the drowning man using a NRSI pink rescue buoy stationed at the beach.
He said their sea rescue craft arrived on scene before Walton could reach the tourist who had been swept away about 150 meters out of the sea by rip currents.
Walton, who was commended by the NSRI for his efforts, swam back to shore and the Russian man was taken to shore on the rescue craft where he was reunited with this family.
He was not injured and no further assistance was required.
