Mopping-up operations are in full swing in the George Municipal area following the weekend storm surge which left coastal areas flooded, with damage to properties and municipal infrastructure.
The Municipality said on Tuesday that it was working hard to ensure the safety of its residents.
George Municipality spokesperson, Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe, said their damage assessments focused on water pipes for potable water supply and electrical components.
He said Herold’s Bay suffered extensive damage to Municipal infrastructure and private properties, but the “value of the damages is still being determined as clean-up operations continue.”
Mangqwengqwe also said that the sewerage pump station was affected, stand-by generators flooded, and bridges, roadways, sidewalks, and retaining walls were damaged.
He said sand deposits on the road also made access difficult, but these were being addressed.

George Municipality said there was moderate damage to Municipal infrastructure and private property in Victoria Bay, with reports of ablution buildings being flooded, and retaining walls and sidewalks being damaged.
The steps to the public beach had been destroyed, and the public was urged to be cautious.
Mangqwengqwe said the Gwaing River lifeguard tower was damaged and concrete pillars exposed, while in the Wilderness some damage was reported to the Leentjies Braai and recreational sites.
He said all these beaches remain closed to the public for recreational use to allow for clean-up and damage assessments.
“The municipality is doing everything possible to ensure that residents and visitors have access to the area as soon as possible,” he concluded.
