The Boardwalk Mall in Nelson Mandela Bay has won the refurbishment/expansion category of the 2023 SACSC Retail Design and Development Awards.
According to a statement on Tuesday, the judges acknowledged that the "degree of difficulty" in achieving the successful transformation of the Centre "was the key differentiator".
The Mall is a major development by the Flanagan & Gerard Group and Emfuleni Resorts and was designed by MDS Architecture.
The Boardwalk Mall opened last September, featuring 92 stores and whose anchor tenants include key retail chains.
"The re-development of Boardwalk Mall has established a high-quality retail and leisure hub in the Eastern Cape, said Paul Gerard, Managing Director of Flanagan & Gerard.
"With this development, the Boardwalk Precinct has transformed into a leading entertainment centre offering top-notch shopping experiences with an unmatched beachfront location. It has created a vibrant new social and shopping heart for Gqeberha," he said.
Pierre Lahaye, of MDS Architecture, said; "Our design is cognizant of integrating into the existing architecture and creating a streetscape that has developed over time."
The South African Council of Shopping Centres RDDA Awards acknowledge and reward industry leaders in the design and development of retail centres.
