The Eastern Cape government says one initiate has died so far during the Summer initiation season while 44 had to be rescued from circumcision schools in Nyandeni and Flagstaff areas.
The Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs says it had dispatched monitoring teams to different localities across the province to check on initiation schools since the December start of the initiation season.
Department spokesperson, Mamkeli Ngam, says the teams have visited around 500 initiates, saying the majority of them are in good health.
He says no arrests, amputations and hospital admissions have been reported by the monitoring teams so far.
