Police services in the Eastern Cape received a boost on Thursday when National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, handed over dozens of vehicles to the SAPS in the province.
The handover took place at the Motherwell police station in Port Elizabeth, where Phiyega presented 32 vehicles to police management for use by specialised services like the K-9 and and Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units.
Earlier, 17 vehicles were presented to the SAPS in Nelson Mandela Bay for use at station level.
Addressing police management as well as local residents, General Phiyega said by handing over the vehicles to boost policing capacity in the Eastern Cape, the SA Police Service was responding to the needs of communities.
She also urged communities to report abuse of state vehicles so that action could be taken against those police officials who break the rules.
