Police in Port Elizabeth are on the hunt for the suspects involved in the hijacking of a local cigarette delivery van at gunpoint in Mount Pleasant.

Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg says the 42-year-old driver of a white Peugeot van and his passenger were driving in Boundary Lane when a white Volkswagen Polo with four occupants stopped behind them around midday on Thursday.

Two of them, who were armed with guns, got out and forced both men out of the vehicle before assaulting them, covering their faces, and forcing them into the Polo.

Captain Janse Van Rensburg says they were dropped off in Kwazakele where they were assisted by a community member who alerted the police.

The delivery vehicle was recovered in Kwazakele by Atlas security shortly thereafter and 127 boxes of cigarettes were found near a school in the area.
