'Cigarette robbers' sentenced in East London

Two armed robbers were each sentenced to 12-years in prison this week for several armed robberies and kidnappings where delivery vehicles of British American Tobacco (BAT) were targeted.

A spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Anelisa Ngcakani says the two executed six armed robberies in the Mdantsane and King Williams Town areas between August of 2013 and April 2014.

The duo had the exact same modus operandi whereby drivers of delivery vehicles would be threatened at gunpoint, locked in the back of their van whilst the robbers fled with boxes full of cigarettes.

Ngcakani says the 32-year-old Yanga Jenete was sentenced to a total of 48 years for four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, however, the sentences will run concurrently.

His accomplice, 30-year-old Ntando Ntobongwana was sentenced to 60-years in prison, but this too will run concurrently.

The pair were also sentenced to 5-years each for kidnapping and this sentence will run concurrently with the rest.

In 2016 another three robbers were sentenced in East London for targeting BAT.
