A total of just less than R23.2 million is required to repair all the damage caused when a tornado hit four local municipalities within the Chris Hani District Municipality in October last year.
Chris Hani has given notice in the Provincial Gazette that it has declared a state of disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act as a result of the incident.
The municipality states that a number of destitute families were left homeless; schools and infrastructure damaged in some areas, especially electricity, with a child being electrocuted in Mbekweni Village, Lukhanji.
A total of R12.9 million will be required to repair damage done in Emalahleni, of which nearly R11 million was for infrastructure that was totally destroyed.
Damage done in Lukhanji amounted to R6.2 million, in Sakhisizwe to just less than R3 million and in Engcobo to R1.4 million.
