Defaulting customers in the Komani area will have to spend a month without water supply.
The Chris Hani District Municipality says its forging ahead with disconnecting defaulters in a desperate bid to recoup billions in outstanding debt.
The municipality says it is owed over R7 billion rand, with one Government Department owing over R20 million while households owe over R1 billion combined.
The District's Executive Mayor, Wongama Gela, says the disconnections will start on Tuesday until April.
The CHDM Executive Mayor, Wongama Gela said special measures have been taken to assist the poor and vulnerable groups.
Gela has also encouraged customers who have not been paying their accounts to urgently negotiate payment arrangements.
Meanwhile, Adre Bartis from the Border Kei Chamber of Business has welcomed the decision.
“Businesses are willing to pay and as the Chamber, we fully support that if you don’t pay you get cut off”, she said.
The CHDM is made up of eight local municipalities covering Cradock, Middleburg, Komani, Whittlesea, Tarkastad, Molteno, Hofmeyer, Cacadu (Lady Frere), Dordrecht, Indwe, Cofimvaba, Tsomo, Cala, Khowa and Engcobo.
