The Chokka season re-opened at noon today after a 3-month closure designed to replenish the stocks in Eastern Cape waters.
SA Squid Management Industrial Association Chairperson, Dino Moodaley says its been a tough 3 months with little or no income for the 130 boat owners and 2 422 chokka licence holders in the industry.
He says they've received feedback from ski-boat owners that the Chokka has returned, but they'll have a better indication in the next day or two.
Moodaley is based in Port Elizabeth and says the weaker Rand should help the industry for now, as the European market remains its biggest customer.
"The economy is just starting to recover now and the other negative factor at the moment is that we missed the summer season. We can say where the markets will open. It all depends on the demand" he said
