Child used as drug mule to transport mandrax to Somerset East

Police have expressed their shock following the arrest of a 10-year-old boy who was used as a drug mule.

Spokesperson Captain Lariane Jonker says police received information from a source about a large shipment of Mandrax tablets being transported from Port Elizabeth, via a minibus taxi, destined for Somerset East.

Police in Cookhouse set up a vehicle checkpoint on Saturday and pulled over a taxi.

Jonker says to their surprise they found a 10-year-old child who was in the possession of 500 mandrax tablets in his school bag.

The drugs had an estimated street value of R30 000.

The child was dealt with in terms of the Child Justice Act and released into the care of his parents.

Police issued a warning to parents to be vigilant as children are often targeted by ruthless drug dealers to transport drugs.
