Child drowns at Wilderness Beach

Police in George have opened up an inquest docket after a 10-year-old girl drowned at the Main Beach in Wilderness.

The spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute Craig Lambinon says their crew was activated after three family members were caught up in rip currents on Tuesday.

He says lifeguards managed to reach two teenagers and brought them safely ashore.

Lambinon says when lifeguards reached the 10-year-old female she was unresponsive.

CPR was unsuccessful and she was declared dead on the scene.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released.
