Chief justice calls for more spending on promoting careers in the law

Chief Justice Moegoeng Moegoeng has called for bursaries and more money to be made available for the promotion of women in the judiciary.

He was the keynote speaker at the annual conference of the South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges underway at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Chief justice Moegoeng told about 150 delegates that there should be a concerted campaign across the board to encourage young South African women and girls to pursue careers in law.

"We will be setting up our women and black men for failure if we do not ensure that we capacitate them for the elevation to the positions that they must be elevated and the starting position is this; we got to make sure that we always have a big enough pool out of which to appoint acting and permanent magistrates, acting and permanent judges" Moegoeng said.
