Charlo man in PE court for R5m ransom "kidnapping"

A Port Elizabeth man who claimed to have been kidnapped for a R5m ransom has been arrested while at a braai with friends on Christmas eve.

Police spokesperson, Captain Stanley Jarvis, says the suspect is expected to appear in court today on charges of obstruction of justice and fraud.

Die Burger reports that the man travelled to Johannesburg on business when, according to his wife, he disappeared between December 12 and 13.

Captain Jarvis this morning confirmed this, and that the woman reported him as missing on the 16th of December.

She said she had received a phone call from "kidnappers" demanding a R5m ransom.

During the investigation, police contacted his Facebook friends, and eventually arrested him during a Christmas braai near Hartebeespoort dam, in the North West province.

Jarvis says the man was running a pyramid investment scheme, and ran into trouble repaying investors.

His name is being witheld at this stage, but he is said to be a 35 years old and living in Charlo.
