Charges dropped against vandal suspect

A suspect has appeared in court after reporting to police in connection with the damage caused to the Queen Victoria statue in Port Elizabeth last week.

Police spokesperson, captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, named the man as Paul Walsh of the Economic Freedom Fighters.

Walsh is the EFF's Eastern Cape spokesman for Science, Technology and Education.

The Statue of Queen Victoria on Market Square was covered in green paint in the early hours of Friday morning. The incident was captured on closed circuit television cameras.

Walsh's defence lawyer Stuart Laubscher told AlgoaFM news a short while ago that charges against his client had been dropped.

Laubscher said the State had decided not to prosecute because a lack of conclusive evidence on the CCTV footage.
