Charges added to Mossel Bay man accused of raping toddler in 2010

A 37-year-old man, who was arrested eight years after raping a 4-year old girl, will appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court Monday.

The suspect was arrested inside the George prison in December 2016, where he is an awaiting trial prisoner on three charges of rape.

According to the police, a single piece of hair linked the suspect to the toddler's brutal rape.

Police say the delay of several years in the prosecution process, was due to a backlog at the laboratory where DNA tests are done.

The man also didn't have any charges against him ten years ago.

However, after blood samples from other crime scenes were captured on the police's database, they were able to positively link him to the attack on the young child.

Police say that two more rape charges which occurred in 2010 and 2011 will also be added to the charge sheet.

He will now face a total of eight charges of rape.
