A 39-year-old woman from the Eastern Cape has laid a charge of sexual assault against a medical doctor from Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
A police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the charge was laid on Tuesday afternoon at the Mount Road police station.
She says according to the complainant the alleged sexual assault took place in February this year.
Colonel Naidu told Algoa FM News that the matter was now being investigated by the Port Elizabeth branch of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
On Monday the Herald Newspaper reported about a specialist at PE's Netcare Greenacres Hospital who had been suspended pending the outcome of a formal inquiry into alleged sexual misconduct.
The doctor, whose name is being withheld, has been suspended by the Health Professions Council of South Africa pending disciplinary proceedings.
