Chaos at fast-food outlet after cement truck backs into bakkie

Accident scene outside KFC in Caledon Street, Kariega

Police in Kariega are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a truck's brakes allegedly failed which led to a collision with two stationary bakkies.

Spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart says the incident happened shortly after 8 am right outside a KFC outlet in Caledon Street.

She says the 23-year-old driver's Mercedez truck, packed with dozens of bags of cement, rolled backwards and collided with a Fidelity and Isuzu bakkie that was parked outside.

Captain Swart said the 63-year-old driver of the Isuzu was still inside the vehicle when the accident occurred.

His vehicle's airbag was deployed as a result of the impact and the driver was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is not clear if the accident is affecting business at KFC as the scene will take some time to clear.

There is, however, a drive-through option that operates around the back of the building.
