Eastern Cape Legislature Speaker Noxolo Kiviet says serious challenges remain in the local government sphere and urgent attention must be given in order to make local government work better.
Delivering her Policy Speech in the Bisho Legislature on Wednesday, Kiviet said it was critically important that Province provide support to municipalities to strengthen their financial management and their capacity to report.
Kiviet said that during the course of the current financial year, the Legislature would build on the relationships established with council speakers to strengthen the oversight capacity at a local level
She added that more time needed to be allocated for public debates in the Legislature.
