The Eastern Cape Health Department says the newly built paediatric ward at Mdantsane's Cecilia Makiwane Hospital will establish the institution as a world-class facility for the people of East London and the Eastern Cape.
Department spokesperson, Siyanda Manana, says the R1.8 billion infrastructure upgrade of the hospital will include a psychiatric ward, various support services, staff accommodation, recreational facilities and a nursing college.
He says the Coega Development Corporation, which is project's implementing agent, anticipates completion of the entire upgrade by June next year.
The upgrade of Cecilia Makiwane Hospital is part of the Bhisho Health Department's overall plan to refurbishing health care facilities across the province.
