The Coega Development Corporation has been appointed to perform assessments of the fire-damaged buildings at Parliament.

The Department of Public Works said in a statement on Sunday that its Bid Evaluation Committee has recommended that the CDC be appointed to conduct the independent assessment.

Minister Patricia de Lille said a team of Structural, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineers concluded “a high-level preliminary visual assessment of the damages including the safety aspect of the site due.”

“On the basis of the preliminary visual inspections, there was evidence of severe structural damage to the slabs. In addition, there were major cracks in the walls on the 2nd and 3rd floor,” she said.

Minister De Lille in close consultation with the National Treasury on Friday, the Department of Public Works appointed the Coega Development Corporation to perform assessments of the fire-damaged buildings at Parliament.

“We are humbled by the confidence placed on the CDC on such an important symbol of our constitutional democracy. We accept the responsibility with the greatest of humility and recognise the hard work that lies ahead of us,” said CDC CEO, Khwezi Tiya.
