Cathcart protest against hospital closure enters third day

Protests by some residents of Cathcart, against the closure of the local hospital, entered its third day.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant, Namhla Mdleleni, says about 200 residents are still protesting on the N-6 which is open to traffic.

She says the protest is continuing even though Health Department officials told residents yesterday that the Cathcart Provincial Hospital would not be closed.

Mdleleni says overnight protesters torched and stone more trucks, bringing to 14 the number of trucks targeted by the protesters.

No arrests have been made even though several case of malicious damage to property are now under investigation.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Raphael Motloung, says residents in Cederville, a town between Matatielle and Kockstad, have brought the town to a standstill for a second day.

He says residents are apparently upset about a new councillor appointed to take office in the area.

Motloung says residents are currently blocking all traffic on the R-56 and are threatening to continue until their grievances are addressed.
