UPDATE: A 25-year-old student from Nelson Mandela University has since been arrested in connection with the viral video showing a car driving recklessly along Beach Road.
Police in Port Elizabeth are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after an unknown person was seen driving recklessly along the Beachfront in the early hours of Monday morning.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the driver, who is yet to be traced, was driving in a rented vehicle.
Naidu says they will give further comment once the authenticity of the video has been verified.
A case was opened at the Humewood police station on Monday by DA Councillor John Best.
He says the rental company has given their full cooperation.
In January this year, a 19-year-old Port Elizabeth woman died after being hit by a car that was apparently ‘spinning’ in a street in Newton Park.
