Case against Roland Williams postponed for him to apply for legal aid

Former Nelson Mandela Bay Communications Director, Roland Williams, appeared briefly in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday where the matter was postponed to the 1st of December for him to apply for legal aid.

The National Prosecuting Authority said he was arrested at his home on Monday for allegedly “breaching the terms and conditions of his 2018 sentence for fraud.”

Williams was sentenced in 2018 to 36 months of correctional supervision, a suspended four-year prison sentence, and was fined R30 000 for defrauding Santam.

He was also ordered to back the R96 000 that had been paid out to him.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Anelisa Ngcakani says Santam submitted an affidavit to the state reporting that the last payment he made to them was on October 2019 and that he owed them R 40 000.

In January 2018, Williams pleaded guilty to insurance fraud after he falsely claimed more than R115 000 in insurance for an accident that never happened.

Williams is currently out on bail of R1 000.
