Cable theft suspects nabbed during high-speed chase

Port Elizabeth Traffic Updates

A high-speed chase between suspected cable thieves and the police in Gqeberha, ended in an arrest after the suspect's vehicle overturned in Deal Party on Monday morning.

Members of the Mount Road Police Station were doing patrols in the Deal Party area at around 06:30 when they noticed a black VW Caddy coming from the direction of New Brighton Beach.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says when the suspects noticed the police in John Tallant Drive, they sped off in the direction of Old Grahamstown Road, towards the Swartkops area.

During the high-speed chase, the Caddy overturned.

Police confiscated two bags containing copper cables, and copper wire tools and the vehicle was impounded.

"The three suspects were detained on charges relating to the Criminal Matters Amendment Act – damage to essential infrastructure.

"Further investigation revealed that the cables were stolen from a drain at the corners of Rose and Pearson Streets, Central," said Janse van Rensburg.

The suspects will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate court during the week.
