Bystanders wounded by stray bullets as community members start firing at police


Port Elizabeth police have condemned attacks on its members while serving to protect communities.

Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says is alleged that Tactical Response Team members were on duty and patrolling the Helenvale area on Monday when they stopped at the corners of Martin and Kobus Roads, and while interacting with a man, he became hostile.

She says an altercation broke out between the members and the man, and members of the community then allegedly started firing at police - who returned fire.

Janse van Rensburg says two people were wounded by stray bullets.

She says a 29-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his upper leg, while a 22-year-old woman sustained an injury to her stomach.

Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have opened attempted murder dockets as well as attempted murder against the police.
