By-elections loom in EC and WC

By-elections are looming in the Eastern and Western Cape that's set to draw the interest of top party leaders.

DA leader, Helen Zille, will be Hofmeyer on Saturday to campaign in Ward 5 in Tsolwana in the Eastern Cape.

The ward became vacant after the independent ward councillor resigned.

The DA says the party has shown immense growth in this rural ward, growing from 7.6 percent in 2011 to 31.7 percent in 2014.

Another by-election will be held in Mbizana.

Meanwhile, the candidates going head to head for Plettenberg Bay's ward 7 council seat, are hoping the next by-election will bring stability in the Bitou Municipality after ongoing political turbulence over the past two months.

The ward, which includes Kranshoek and Hakerville, has been under ANC control until councillor Nolan Stuurman suddenly resigned on July 27th.

This in the midst of court action involving a move by him and five other local ANC councillors to take over the DA-led municipality and replace its leadership.

The Independent Electoral Commission announced last month that the ward should be contested in a by-election on September 17.

The DA's candidate is Bitou Municipality Speaker Annelise Olivier while Sammy Jansen is the ANC contender.

Olivier said that if the DA won the ward, it would make Bitou more governable as there would no longer be a need for a coalition with COPE.

ANC Southern Cape secretary Putco Mapitiza said Jansen had been chosen as the party's candidate as they could no longer tolerate the "divisive and skewed service delivery" by DA anymore.
