The NSRI in East London reached the yacht Barbarian late on Thursday, which struggled with a damaged rudder 6 nautical miles off shore from Mazeppa Bay, some 50 nautical miles from East London.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says their sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF LOTTO towed the yacht safely back to the Port of East London.
He says the three sailors aboard the stricken vessel, 64-year old skipper Jack Hattingh from Robertson, and two crewmen in their 20's, Kyle Doherthy from Gordons Bay, and Luke Tothill from Johannesburg will carry out repairs to the damaged rudder before continuing their voyage.
They are sailing from Durban to Gordon’s Bay in the Western Cape.
