Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, said the City’s beaches would be closely monitored after scores of residents flocked to the beachfront after lockdown regulations were eased.
He said an operational plan was put in place on Friday with a focus on visible patrols as well as foot patrols.
Bhanga said the City’s Metro police, traffic officers, security guards, and lifeguards “did a commendable job over the weekend.”
However, he said beaches would be closely monitored after a video did the rounds on social media showing a group of women “assaulting” police officers on Friday night.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, confirmed the arrests and that the three would appear in court on Monday.
Bhanga said there would be close monitoring of the beaches to “avoid a re-occurrence’ adding that “resources will be aligned in terms of situational appropriateness.”
The mayor also said that ten people were arrested in Walmer on Friday for transgressing the curfew while nine were in Kabega Park on Saturday.
He cautioned residents to act responsibly as “the virus was still with us.”
