Algoa FM Managing Director, Alfie Jay, paid tribute to the late Eastern Cape businessman, Archie Nkonyeni, who has died.

Nkonyeni served as the first chairperson of the Board of Umoya Communications which had acquired the license for Algoa FM in 1996 from the then IBA, which later became ICASA.

Jay said Nkonyeni held this position for approximately two years after “our privatization before stepping down to retire from travel.”

Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane, also paid tribute to Nkonyeni in a statement on Sunday.

He said Nkonyeni “was one of the best enterprising entrepreneurs from the Eastern Cape province whose influence, the impact of entrepreneurial prowess, and leadership spread to the entire country inspiring his election to the office of President of the NAFCOC.”

The Premier said he had applied to President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare Nkonyeni’s funeral service a state funeral.
