The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has come out in support of NMMU's efforts to complete the 2016 academic programme in the face of continued disruptions during the fees must fall protests.
At least 33 NMMU students were arrested this week in running battles with police.
The Chamber says in a statement that it does not believe that the fundamental challenges in the tertiary education system in South Africa should be solved through the current unacceptable level of violence and destruction at the country's universities.
It feels that the completion of the academic year at NMMU is a national business imperative and has thus offered to assist the University with conducting examinations and classes off campus.
The Business Chamber is appealing to its members to inform it of the availability of venues suitable for lectures and examinations and of the availability of temporary student housing to serve as safe havens for out-of-town students who would like to complete the academic year.
The Chamber says it will compile this information in-house and share it with the university management in the strictest of confidentiality possible.
