The Xolani High School in Zwelitsha has paid tribute to one of their Grade 9 learners who took her own life.

Anothando Willie committed suicide in her home on the 26th of March following an altercation with other students at the school.

The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape says according to a report released by the District Director, Willie had a spiritual gift (a calling) and was allegedly accused of practising witchcraft.

Willie's mother visited the school in February to alert teachers about her calling in order to tell her classmates to raise awareness and tolerance regarding the situation.

A spokesperson for the Department Mali Mtima says unfortunately on the 14th of March the deceased and three other learners got involved in a physical altercation.

He says when parents and teachers intervened the girls promised to bury the hatchet and social workers were dispatched to the school to talk about bullying.

Mtima says sessions with a therapist are being arranged with all the families and the three affected learners before schools reopen on 5 April 2022.
