No power in Sterkstroom for 11 days

Residents in most parts of Sterkstroom in the Eastern Cape have been without electricity for at least 11 days.

The outage follows after a transformer was vandalised and 1 000 litres of oil stolen nearly two weeks ago.

The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, which the town falls under, initially said the electricity would be restored last Friday.

Democratic Alliance councillor, Lindi Haggart, says the community has received little correspondence to update them about the situation.

The last update from the municipality was posted on their Facebook page on 21 March, informing residents of the vandalism and that the transformer needed mechanical work.

Haggart says they have been sent from pillar to post to get information and have been told on numerous occasions that the issue would be resolved on that same day.

She says a municipal official told her early last week that the new transformer was en route from Germiston in Gauteng.

Haggart says after following up once again on Wednesday, the company however informed her that they are still awaiting final paperwork from the municipality.

They have since issued a statement to Algoa FM news, informing the Sterkstroom community that the procurement for a replacement transformer is underway.

Municipal spokesperson, Lonwabo Kowa, says the damage caused by vandals who they believed tried to steal copper pipes, was severe.

He says that earlier mechanical works to repair it was also not successful.

Algoa FM news also asked what the timeline of the procurement process was in order to restore electricity to the town's residents - an answer was however not given.
