Refurbishment of the Buffalo River Bridge, a joint project between the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and Transnet National Ports Authority, has been completed and the bridge will be officially re-opened to the public on Friday, 1 March 2013.
The project included excavation of the concrete road deck, replacement of damaged beams, new walkway and balustrades and re-asphalting of the road surface. The repairs also necessitated the replacement and relocation of a number of services beneath the walkways including electrical, Telkom and fibre-optic cables and water mains.
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has also installed traffic calming measures and new lighting and upgraded walkways leading to the bridge.
East London Port Manager Jacqueline Brown and City Manager Andile Fani have expressed their deep appreciation to the East London community and specifically West Bank residents for their patience during this project.
The Buffalo Bridge, the only double decker road and rail bridge in Africa, was built in the early 1930s and officially opened on 27 December 1934, coinciding with the date of South African's first Grand Prix held on the East London.
